Beyond all the glitz, glamour and cacophony, there is a Hong Kong that’s going to surprise you and that too without putting in a huge dent in your pocket.
City, Forest, water front, beach and Hills co-exists in Hong Kong, 30 minutes from the city center and you will find yourself hiking far away from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis. I went for Dragon Back hike. This 8.5 km route with panoramic sea views took me approximately 3 hour to complete and the route ended at this amazing ‘Big Wave Bay’ beach.
After obtaining my visa on arrival, went on and bought a travel pass (return airport express and metro ride combo) and finally checked-in to a dromedary with three other nationals.
Hong Kong has more than twenty five thousand restaurants, but had to dig deep beyond all the high street resultants to find the gems. The best part of these gems was they were within USD 15.
Tim Ho Wan (Dim-Sum Specialists) –Michelin star restaurant, obliviously delicious but light on pocket, quite unlike Hong Kong.
Lin Heung Tea House – the place is ancient, but magical for people like me who love dumplings, imagine a trolley full of dim-sum boxes, pick at your will and enjoy it with a pot of jasmine tea. Do try the one filled with lotus paste. My co-guests were mainly businessmen and stock traders out for lunch.
Australia Dairy Company – had to queue up for 20 minutes to get into this famous breakfast destination. Top pick – scrambled eggs, cheese toast, steamed pudding.
The Mandarin Cake Shop – artisan chocolate boutique shop on the first floor of Mandarin hotel, enjoyed my chocolate cake with a nice cup of coffee.
Explore SOHO District for any or all type of restaurants/ cuisine and few ride on the world’s longest outdoor escalator system. Dining and nightlife district of Lan Kwai Fong is full of chic pubs, bars and eateries. Also not to forget the bakery shops (fresh and affordable) at central station, do try the pineapple bun.
When at “The Peak”, stay there till 8pm for “The Symphony of Light”. Take star ferry while hopping onto the other island. After visiting the Disneyland Tokyo, this one in Hong Kong was a lackluster. Hong Kong without shopping, something missing, IFC mall is the place, it has it all.
